On 17 October 2019, the Poverty Alleviation Activities Held by National Non-governmental Organizations in Grain and Agriculture Industry & 17th China International Trade Fair for the Grain and Oil Products, Equipment and Technology (International Grain Expo, or CIGOEX) were held in Hefei, Anhui Province. The Poverty Alleviation Activities were hosted by Bureau for Administration on Social Organizations, Ministry of Civil Affairs of China. The CIGOEX was hosted by China National Association of Grain Sector. ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) participated in the CIGOEX as a supporting party. Grain sector associations and organizations from different provinces and cities of China actively participated in the events. Mr. Guo Chuanwei, Director of Trade and Investment (TID) of ACC attended theopening ceremony and delivered remarks upon invitation.
The CIGOEX coincided with China’s sixth National Poverty Relief Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2019. Mr. Zhan Chengfu, Vice Minister of Civil Affairs of China said that as for social organizations, poverty alleviation is not only an important responsibility, but also a good stage and practical way to achieve self-development. He hoped that various social organizations could make use of this event and establish a broad platform for cooperation, open more channels for their participation in poverty alleviation through industry development and improve the ability of the poor to shake off povertyand increase income.
Mr. Deng Xiangyang, Executive Vice Governor of Anhui Province said that Anhui would give full play to the role of the CIGOEX platform, promote local brands of high-quality grain, oil and grain machinery, introduce advanced equipment and technology, strengthen economic and trade cooperation to achieve higher quality development of the grain industry in Anhui Province.
Mr. Han Weijiang, Deputy Director General of the State Food and Materials Reserve Bureau said that poverty alleviation through consumption is an important way for social forces to participate in poverty alleviation. It motivates the whole society to take part in poverty alleviation and improve the quality of products and services in poverty-stricken areas. Mr. Yu Xubo, President of China National Association of Grain Sector said that the Association serves national food security and macroeconomic regulation, and is committed to effective communication between government and enterprises. The CIGOEX not only provided a platform for grain industry and its member enterprises to carry out cooperation between production area and sales area, but also promoted domestic and foreign trade.

Director Guo Chuanwei said that agriculture is an important area of economic cooperation between ASEAN and China. Within the framework of the BRI cooperation, thanks to the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and the upgraded version of the FTA, trade in agricultural products has increased rapidly with a growing variety and scale of trading products, which has brought tangible benefits to the people of both sides.
The Proposal for Poverty Alleviation of National Social Organization of Grain Sector was signed at the opening ceremony.
ACC set up an ASEAN Pavilion at the CIGOEX. Industrial and commercial associations as well as trade enterprises from Lao PDR, Malaysia, Thailand and Viet Nam participated in the exhibition. ASEAN-featured agricultural products including palm oil, tea, dried fruit and coffee attracted a large number of visitors. The ASEAN Pavilion had become one of the must-see pavilions of the fair.
