On 27 October 2016, H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping, Secretary-General of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), gave a joint interview to the ASEAN and Chinese media reporting on the theme of “Jointly Building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road” at Ruili City of Yunnan Province. She answered questions raised by the journalists on ASEAN-China relations, joint construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, ACC’s work and media’s role.
Mme. Yang said that 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of ASEAN-China dialogue relations. It is also the Year of Educational Exchange for both sides. Over the past 25 years, ASEAN-China relations have gone from strength to strength. Compared with other ASEAN's dialogue partners, ASEAN-China relations is currently the most robust and fruitful relationship, yielding tangible benefits to the people of both sides, and making significant contributions to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
On ACC’s mandates and work, Mme. Yang said that since its inception, ACC has been, on the consensus reached by the leaders, playing its role as a one-stop information and activities centre to promote practical cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture, tourism. It has accomplished more than 100 flagship projects, organized or participated in more than 500 activities. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and the ASEAN-China Year of Tourism Cooperation. ACC will continue its efforts to promote friendly exchanges and concrete cooperation in a solid and innovative manner so as to make greater contributions to the sustainable development of ASEAN-China relations.
Secretary-General Yang said that ACC attaches great importance to ASEAN-China exchanges and cooperation in information and media. It has organized nearly 20 journalists from Chinese media agencies to visit the Lao PDR, Thailand, Cambodia and Viet Nam. This year, ACC organized the second reporting trip by journalists from ASEAN countries again on the theme of “Jointly Building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road”.
Media plays a crucial role in being a bridge in promoting mutual understanding and friendly feelings among the people. The construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road is not just a solo, but a symphony performed by all stakeholders, calling for the active participation of ASEAN countries. Media plays an important role in this connection. She hoped that this reporting trip would give the journalists a better understanding of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road, and the fruitful achievements and far-stretching vistas of ASEAN-China cooperation. She hoped that ASEAN media will continue to report in a fair and objective way, sing out loud the melody of ASEAN-China cooperation, and inject more positive energy into the development of ASEAN-China cooperation.
The ASEAN journalists extended sincere thanks to the State Council Information Office of China, ACC, China Report Magazine and the relevant authorities of Jiangsu and Yunnan Provinces for their thoughtful arrangements for the reporting trip saying that they will relay to the people of their respective ASEAN countries the achievements of China’s social-economic development and the outcomes of ASEAN-China pragmatic cooperation seen with their own eyes along with the friendship and good will between the people of ASEAN and China. They all looked forward to more opportunities of join activities of this sort in the future.
