Beijing Cultural Tour in ASEAN Warmly Welcomed in Pattaya, Thailand

On 15 February 2016, at the invitation of the Thailand-ASEAN Economic and Cultural Committee, the project of Beijing Cultural Tour in ASEAN (BCTA), co-sponsored by Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), Thai-Chinese Cultural and Relationship Council, Thailand-ASEAN Economic and Cultural Committee and China Cultural Center in Bangkok, was successfully held in Pattaya for its second presentation in Thailand. Mr. Ittipol Khunplome, Mayor of Pattaya, Mr. Sontaya Khunplome, former Minister of Culture of Thailand, Mr. Bundit Sirithunyhong, President of Thailand-ASEAN Economic and Cultural Committee, and Vice President of the Thai-Chinese Cultural and Relationship Council, and other local government officials and distinguished guests attended the event. Ms. Lan Suhong, Director of Chinese Cultural Centre in Bangkok, Mr. Qin Yusen, Senior Consultant of China Cultural Centre in Bangkok, Ms. Yu Zhou, Head of the BCTA delegation and Mr. Sun Jianhua, Deputy Director of Education, Culture and Tourism Division (ECTD) of ACC met with the above mentioned guests and had in-depth exchanges on further promoting Thailand and China cultural exchange and cooperation.

Mr. Ittipol Khunplome welcomed the BCTA delegation for carrying out cultural exchange activities in Pattaya during Chinese Spring Festival, and hoped the activities could help increase the understanding of Chinese culture, especially the culture of Beijing by the local people. Mr. Sontaya Khunplome said, the pace and scale of cultural exchanges between Thailand and China had become significant since the establishment of the diplomatic relations of the two countries over 40 years ago, and cultural cooperation between Thailand and China had played a very important role for further enhancing the overall relations of the two countries. Mr. Bundit Sirithunyhong introduced the main functions of Thailand-ASEAN Economic and Cultural Committee and the Committee’s plan for promoting cultural, educational and economic cooperation between Thailand and China. He also expressed the willingness to have in-depth exchanges and cooperation with ACC and other cultural organizations of China in the future.

Ms. Yu Zhou and Mr. Sun Jianhua briefed on the mandates and recent work of Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and ACC respectively. They hoped that close contacts with both the government and non-government organizations of Pattaya would be built through this visit, and joint efforts would be made to reach concrete results of cultural exchange and cooperation between the sides. 

 

Pattaya is an important tourist city in Thailand, attracting nearly half of the Chinese visitors to Thailand each year. Local governmental and non-governmental organizations of the city were making efforts to conduct economic and cultural exchanges with China. Pattaya Central Plaza, where the BCTA activities were held, is the largest local leisure shopping center, with convenient location and intensive passenger flow. During the nearly 4 hours of BCTA activities including intangible cultural heritage handicraft demonstration, folklore performance and photo exhibition of Beijing, more than a thousand visitors were attracted to stop for viewing and interaction.
