Chinese Media Delegation Joining the “Reporting Trip” Conducted a Series of Interviews and Visits in Chiang Rai Province

n 4-5 August 2015, the Chinese media delegates attended the meetings, conducted interviews and site-visits in Chiang Rai Province of Thailand. They visited Chiang Khong, Chiang Saen and Chiang Rai, before heading to Chiang Mai Province as their next stop.

 

ice Governor Ratchakrit Sathiranon of Chiang Rai Province, accompanied by the relevant officials at the provincial level including Mr. Chalaempon Pongchabubnapa, Executive Director of the Office of Commercial Affairs of Chiang Rai Province, Mr. Anurat Intorn, President of the Chiang Rai Chamber of Commerce, and Mr. Chatchai Pattananuphrap, Vice Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries Chiang Rai Chapter, etc., met with the Chinese media delegation participating in the “Reporting Trip” to ASEAN via Route 3A (R3A) from Jinghong, Mohan, Boten and Houayxay to Chiang Khong.

Lada Phumas, Director of Information and Public Relations Division (IPRD) of ASEAN-China Centre (ACC), introduced background and development of ACC, ACC’s roles and mandates to promote ASEAN-China functional cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, education, culture and tourism as well as its endeavour in engaging with ASEAN and Chinese media to raise awareness about ASEAN and ASEAN-China relations as well as create mutual understanding between the peoples of China and ASEAN.


 

ice Governor of Chiang Rai and his team welcomed the delegation and thanked ACC for conducting proactive activities which would help enhance win-win cooperation among ASEAN and ASEAN-China Strategic Partnership. The Chinese media delegation and the team from the Province exchanged views on many issues such as the readiness of the Province for the upcoming realization of ASEAN Community building, Chiang Rai’s positioning in the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), ASEAN and ASEAN-China cooperation, particularly in light of connectivity,  ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) and the upgrading of ACFTA, current development of the Province as being a gateway connecting with Thailand’s neighbouring countries and China as well as a destination for Chinese businessmen, investors and tourists. The meeting was productive, projecting some recommendations on prospects for future cooperation. It also highlighted on the significance of connectivity to promote sustainable economic and social development in the related areas. 

 

The journalists had a chance to interview Executive Director Chalaempon Pongchabubnapa and local officials concerned in Chiang Khong District of Chiang Rai Province at Chiang Khong Immigration Office, located at the Thai side of the 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. At the interview, Executive Director Chalaempon emphasized on the significance of R3A and the 4th Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connecting Chiang Khong to Laos and China, a necessity to further talks and negotiations among the relevant parties to resolve the bottlenecks in connectivity, and roles of the richer countries to render hands and assistance to the less developed countries, etc.. He supported China’s “One Belt One Road” initiative and hoped the Chinese side to take more contributions to facilitate the regional linkages and development. The meeting proved informative. The Chinese media received many useful information and statistics in all related areas for further digestion and studies.  

 

he journalists and reporters made site-visits to the Chiang Khong Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Chiang Saen Port and Wat Rong Khun. At the wharf, they interviewed Mr. Nataphon Rajatasilpin, Chief of Habour and Cargo Section, and particular interest was paid on the issues such as safety navigation along the Mekong River and the significance of Chiang Saen Port in connecting with the ports in Myanmar and Jinghong, and relevant challenges in light of the existing R3A and other means of transportations, etc. At Wat Rong Khun, the delegation made an exclusive interview with Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, the world-famous Thai avant-garde artist who owned and designed the Wat. Mr. Chalermchai shared his experience and views on art and religion, and provided Chinese visitors with some suggestions for the better preservation of Buddhist art.

 

he “Reporting Trip” in Chiang Rai was successful, encompassing multi-faceted dimensions of cooperation within ASEAN and ASEAN-China relations. Some suggestions were put forwarded to the Chinese government, investors and tourists.
