On 28-29 June 2015, the ASEAN media delegates, led by ASEAN-China Centre (ACC) Secretary-General H.E. Mme. Yang Xiuping and Ms. Zhao Jun, Vice Editor-in-Chief of China Report, visited Quanzhou.

Mr. Chen Rongzhou, Deputy Mayor of Quanzhou City, met and received an interview by the ASEAN media on the issue of Maritime Silk Road. The session was informative. Deputy Mayor Chen briefed on the history, current and future plan of the City’s development, as well as the roles Quanzhou has played for the joint building of the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" such as joining hand with Xi’an to promote “One Belt One Road” Initiative since the two cities are the starting points of the Silk Road (by land and sea) and organizing a number of activities to support the implementation of the City’s action plan in relation to the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road". The delegation was interested in specific areas, particularly on trade and investment. Deputy Mayor Chen said Quanzhou would like to further advance cooperation with ASEAN countries.

The ASEAN media journalists visited Quanzhou Evening News Office and had an interactive discussion with Mr. Guo Pei Ming, the deputy Editor-in-Chief and his team. The journalists had an opportunity to learn more about this Chinese mainstream media agency in outreaching “One Belt One Road” initiative to the general public as well as its business and cooperation with some local media agencies in ASEAN. Quanzhou Evening News also publicized the “Reporting Trip” by the ASEAN media group to Quanzhou on the front page of its newspaper on 29 June 2015. The “Reporting Trip” in Quanzhou was fruitful. The delegates also visited Yihai Kerry (Quanzhou) Oils, Grains and Foodstuffs Industry Co. Ltd., where they learnt about the success of the Industry, the Industry’s roles and involvement in the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road" initiative, and future cooperation with the businesses in some ASEAN countries. The Trip was more educative by including the site visits to Kaiyuan Monastery, Quanzhou Jiuri Mountain and Quanzhou Maritime Museum, where the delegation had first-hand experience on the history and development, as well as linkages between the past and the present of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road and different cultures which were integrated harmoniously in Quanzhou.

Besides, the ASEAN journalists were interviewed on-site during the trip by the local media such as the Quanzhou News and Television, whereby the news about the “Reporting Trip” was reached out more to the local public.

Quanzhou is currently the largest city in Fujian Province. Between the 11th and the 14th Century, it was one of the world’s largest seaports, hosting a large community of foreign-born inhabitants from across the Eurasian world. Due to this reputation, Quanzhou has been called the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road.
